Accounting & Finance

Mr. Asanka Senevirathne, Senior Lecturer in Accountancy & Business Finance

I am Asanka Senevirathne, and I am committed to continuous professional development. It is my way of dealing with whoever I meet with a friendly spirit. I respect my parents, family, nation, and predecessors who have contributed to the nation and organisation where I live and serve at present. My career is blessed with successful academic and professional records, which I have reached right now in the field of Accountancy and Business finance. I am so grateful to my parent, brothers and sisters, wife, kids, family, relations, peers, nature, the universe, and almighty God for creating and nurturing me.

I am a senior lecturer in accounting and business finance attached to the Department of Accounting and Finance, Faculty of Management Studies, of the Open University of Sri Lanka. The journey at OUSL commenced on 03.12.2012. I  hold a Master of Business Administration Degree (MBA) (Merit) from the University of Wayamba and B.Sc. Accountancy and Business Finance (Sp) (1st Class Honours) Degree from the same university. I am a member of the Association of Accounting Technicians in Sri Lanka (MAAT- LM4994) and a member of the Institute of Chartered Professional Managers of Sri Lanka (MCPM-01201). At present, I am reading for  PhD at the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Before joining the Open University of Sri Lanka in 2012, I got a chance to serve as an assistant lecturer attached to the Department of Accountancy, Faculty of Business Studies and Finance, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka from 01.09.2009 to 02.12.2012. I got better foundation for my academic career from Wayamba University. In addition to lecturing, I coordinated the internship programme of the Department of Accountancy and contributed to the development of the Journal of Accounting and Finance issued by the Department of Accountancy, Faculty of Business Studies in Wayamba University. At present I am, the department-level coordinator of the BMS programme offered by the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS). Previously I coordinated the MBA in HRM Programme offered by the Department of Human Resource Management and Common Wealth Executive Master of Business Administration/Public Administration, [CEMBA/CEMPA] which is currently coordinated by the Department of Accounting and Finance.

I am an expert in accounting and finance, with a primary focus on cutting-edge research in “Personal Financial Management.” My specialization delves into the intricacies of “Personal Financial Literacy,” “Financial Inclusion,” and “Techno-Financial Literacy.” My current doctoral research explores the profound impact of financial literacy on the performance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Sri Lanka. My PhD thesis, titled “Impact of Financial Literacy on Firm Performance of SMEs in Sri Lanka,” is a comprehensive study shedding light on the pivotal role financial literacy plays in the success of SMEs.

In addition to my doctoral work, I actively engage in research within the realm of Open Distance Learning (ODL). This area holds a central position in my academic responsibilities at the Open University of Sri Lanka. In this capacity, I am pioneering the integration of information technology, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality to revolutionize teaching and learning processes. This innovative approach enhances the educational experience, bringing a dynamic dimension to open distance learning and fostering a technologically advanced environment for both educators and students alike.

I can recall happily of the miles stone achievement on November 27 2018, by achieving a Gold Medal for the Best Paper Award for the Co-Author research with Ms. H.C.Dassanayeke at the Asian Association of Open University Annual Conference in Hanoi, Vietnam. I am happy to announce that I initiated two short courses with Mr C.P.Weerasekara in November 2018. [01] Short courses in Computerize Accounting and [02] Short courses in Financial Accounting.  This is the 1st time of the Open University history has offered two Short Courses in Financial Accounting and Computerized Accounting.

I like to serve the underprivileged and marginalised segment in my country that is thirsty for education but unable to access a high-standard level of lifestyle.  So, I am continuously committed to academic teaching, course material development, research, and publication, especially on personal financial management and wealth accumulation.

I believe, with all collective effort, we can rebuild our motherland, “Sri Lanka,” as a rich nation in terms of high living standards and annual per capita income of over 25,000 US$. So, I will commit to playing my role as a senior academic at a national university for the betterment of those who need my support.

Best Wishes..!

Asanka Senevirathne
