Master of Education

This is a 30-credit study programme. A candidate should acquire the 30 credits within a minimum of one year.

Objectives:

  • To expand the opportunities for higher studies in Education for those who are already serving in the field
  • To enable personnel already serving in higher educational institutions to obtain specialized knowledge in fields relevant to their professions by offering a variety of new subjects
  • To promote research in areas relevant to the development of Education

The programme consists of course work only. The course work comprises 3 compulsory courses and one optional course. This programme will be conducted in Colombo (Sinhala, Tamil & English), Kandy (Sinhala medium only) and Jaffna (Tamil medium only) regional centers.

The minimum entry requirements for the Master of Education Degree Programme are as follows:

1. A pass in the Degree of Bachelor of Education of at least three years’ duration from The Open University of Sri Lanka or any other recognized university
        1.1 with a minimum GPA of 2.70, and

        1.2. including at least B Grade for any two (02) of the courses: Educational Psychology, Foundations of Education, Educational Measurement & Evaluation, or any equivalent courses,

or,
 2. A pass in a Bachelor’s degree of at least three years’ duration in any discipline and a subsequently awarded Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), Postgraduate Diploma in Special Needs in Education (PGDSNE) or Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership and Management (PGDELM) from The Open University of Sri Lanka or any other recognized university
        2.1 with a minimum GPA of 2.70, and 
        2.2 including at least B Grade for any two (02) of the courses: Educational Psychology, Foundations of Education, Educational Measurement & Evaluation, or any equivalent courses,
or, 
3. For those who have PGDE or B.Ed. certificates without indicating the GPA value,
         3.1 a Merit or Distinction Pass in the Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) Programme or minimum of Second Class Lower Division in Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) Programme from The Open University of Sri Lanka or any other recognized University, and
         3.2 including at least B Grade for any two (02) of the courses: Educational Psychology, Foundations of Education, Educational Measurement & Evaluation or any equivalent courses,
or, 
4. For those who have been exempted from Level 5 in the Degree of Bachelor of Education Honours in Natural Sciences from The Open University of Sri Lanka, a pass in the said degree programme
        4.1 with a minimum GPV of 2.70 at Level 6, and
        4.2 including at least B Grades for the two courses Psychology of the Adolescent, and Educational Measurement & Evaluation,
or, 
5. an equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the Senate of the OUSL
