Less Plastic Movement National Campaign 2023 (I)

“Less Plastic Movement National Campaign 2023” was organized by the Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (CESSD), Open University of Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Central Environmental Authority, Marine Environment Protection of Public Administration, Home Affairs, provincial councils, and the government. With their immense support, this program was successfully completed from May 10th to June 5th, 2023.

In the first stage of the program, a nationwide education and awareness campaign was conducted from May 10th to June 4th, 2023. Subsequently, in the second stage, an activity day was scheduled for June 5th, aligning with World Environment Day. On the activity day, a comprehensive initiative was undertaken to collect waste plastics across the entire island.”

Waste plastics collected locations on 5th of June – 56 locations including 26 island sites, 10 marine sites, and beach sites

 

Total plastic waste (recyclable) collected from all 10 marine sites                       = 368.65 Kg

Total plastic waste (non-recyclable) collected from 10 marine sites                    = 361.45Kg

Waste (recyclable) collected from BOC sponsored sites (06 marine sites)         = 220.80 Kg

Waste (non-recyclable) collected from BOC sponsored sites (06 marine sites) = 217.85 Kg
