Mission
“Achieving excellence in providing life–long learning opportunities in engineering and technology for all to meet industrial and social needs through open and distance learning, and support research and scholarship by efficient and sustainable use of resources.”
Message from the Dean
Welcome to the Faculty of Engineering Technology at the Open University of Sri Lanka. We take pride in being among the pioneering institutions worldwide to offer engineering degrees through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) while being renowned as the third Engineering Faculty established in Sri Lanka. Our mission aligns with that of the Open University of Sri Lanka which aims to provide lifelong learning opportunities through Open, Distance and Flexible Education, with an unwavering commitment to excellence in teaching and research. We have been at the forefront of engineering education since 1987, producing over two thousand graduates who have excelled in various capacities across the globe, demonstrating that the mode of delivery is not a barrier to quality engineering education.
We offer a comprehensive range of engineering specializations through our flagship Bachelor of Science Honours in Engineering – BScHons (Eng)] program.
These include:
- Agricultural Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Computer Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Electronic & Communication Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Mechatronics Engineering
- Textile and Clothing Engineering
In addition to these engineering disciplines, we provide Bachelor of Industrial Studies Honours (BISHons) and Bachelor of Software Engineering Honours (BSEHons) programs which caters to diverse industrial needs. For those seeking advanced studies, we offer postgraduate programs including master’s degrees and research-based MPhil and PhD programs, allowing you to further your education based on your career aspirations.
The quality of our programmes is rigorously evaluated by the University Grants Commission (UGC), ensuring that we maintain high educational standards and meet stringent academic criteria. We are proud to announce that, our programmes have received an A grade in recent quality assurance evaluations. This achievement is a testament to our faculty’s dedication to excellence in teaching, research, and overall academic contribution.
At the Faculty of Engineering Technology, we believe in the power of self-learning as an essential skill for lifelong success. Our ODL approach allows you the flexibility to learn at your own pace while balancing work or other commitments. This method not only imparts technical knowledge but also cultivates crucial life skills such as time management, self-discipline, and independent problem-solving. We complement theoretical learning with practical exposure through well-equipped laboratories for all disciplines. Moreover, we emphasize the importance of industrial training, ensuring that our students gain real-world experience and are well-prepared for their future careers.
We are continually evolving to meet the demands of the rapidly changing engineering landscape. Our faculty is in the process of transitioning to a semester-based system and revising our syllabi to ensure that our programs remain cutting-edge and relevant. We are also working towards reducing the minimum time required for degree completion to four years, making our programs more accessible and efficient. While the challenges of open and distance learning in engineering are significant, we believe that overcoming these challenges equips our students with invaluable skills for lifelong learning and adaptability in their professional lives. As we await the results of the ongoing evaluation by the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL), we remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of engineering education recognized both nationally and internationally.
We invite you to join our vibrant community of learners and innovators. Whether you’re a prospective student, a current learner, or an industry partner, we are here to support you in your journey of growth and discovery in the exciting field of engineering. Welcome to a world of opportunities at the Faculty of Engineering Technology, OUSL.
